Pre-winter detailing required?

Hey guys,

Right now I'm closing in on almost 4 months since my last full wax job (where I also clayed and polished), and the water still beads nicely.

This is my daily driver but it's always garaged.

Do I still need to perform another full detailing before winter rolls around?

Any thoughts and suggestions are much appreciated.

If you are running out of weather conducive to waxing, I would wax again, even if you are still beading water. Just my two cents.

I used to live in NY, so I know what it's like trying to wash and wax in the middle of the winter. Not fun.

If it's still sunny and warm, I'd just wax it again. It doesn't hurt and it'll make you feel more assured that the car's protected from the winter crud.

Agreed, I'd at least hit it with a fresh coat of wax/sealant sometime before winter. Especially if you're using wax as opposed to sealant. It's a long time from now to the end of winter.

As far as a full detail job, that's your call. You'll probably want to do one next spring because your paint will take a beating over the winter. But, if you just polished it 4 months ago, you may not need one now. Just depends on what kind of swirls/scratches/etc. you've gotten in the last 4 months and what your tolerance is.

Wash it good. Inspect the paint. Decide if you want to polish or not. Wax/seal for sure.

My 2 cents

I would, but that's me! I wax/polish, my vehicles at least 4 x's a yr...probably don't need to do it that often, but I enjoy it!

^ what kind of wax do you use? That's overkill if you're using a real wax.

Does the real wax last longer than cleaner wax?

I do notice that the pure carnuba wax (after I claybarred and added S/G) lasts longer than the cleaner wax I used to use. My car's paint (after 5 months) is already feeling rough .

Edit: I should add that the car is still hella shiny. That pure carnuba wax really does leave a lasting shine.

I think Pb was referring to the once a week comment.

Five months is pretty impressive for a carnauba.

^

That's a synthetic wax I believe.

My previous detail included some 3M Show Car Liquid Wax (which I think is a synthetic/sealant) layered on top of Mother's carnauba cleaner wax.

The paint still feels smooth to the touch after a car wash.

But from what I'm getting here, I should probably do a complete detail again before winter hits.

Well it was shiny in early Sept but I wanted to redo it just for the winter but yeah.. it lasts an unusually long time esp. compared to my cleaner wax (and it's the same company!)
