Meguiars #83

Is #83 a "pure" polish/cleaner with no fillers? What I'm wondering is, after you've used it and gotten rid of whatever swirls you can, are they gone for sure or is there some filler component that also masks?

Thanks.

It is not a filler product. When it removes the swirls, it really removes them. Here is an example of a hood I polished with DACP (#83). Here is the before:

And here is the after. I tried to get it at the same angle. I have no idea why it looks like it is a different color other than the fact that without the swirls all over the place the camera may have been able to focus a little bit better. This is after maybe five or ten minutes worth of polishing with a Porter Cable 7424 and Meguiar's #83.

Those swirls are not just filled. They are absolutely gone. You can check the work of DACP by wiping down the area with isopropryl alcohol and seeing if any swirls come back. rubbing alcohol will remove fillers. DACP is not leaving anything behind that hides swirls. It is also a product that is only effective when applied with a machine. I would not suggest even attempting to get results like that by hand with this polish.

Do you remember what pad you used?

OK thanks. That's what I was hoping to hear. I'm currently using some of the Pinnacle XMT polishes, but wanted to try #83 because of your recommendation and because it's substantially less expensive than the XMT products and available locally.

Pretty sure it was the Meguiar's Red pad. That was the only cutting pad I used back in the day. That picture is from four years ago or so. I started using Edge 2000 pads shortly after that car.

Do you recommend the Edge 2000 pads over Lake Country pads on a traditional backing plate? I just started using the PC, and my pads will last me awhile, but am thinking to the future, and wondering if I should consider switching to the Edge 2000 rather than buying more LC pads.

I don't see any reason to ever go back to velcro pads after using the Edge 2000 system. All velcro pads offer is a design that is guaranteed not to last as long and a backing plate that is a risk to your vehicle. Foam is foam pretty much, so as long as the pad does its job then it doesn't matter who made it or how it is attached to the machine for the most part. The reason I use the Edge pads is because they last way longer than velcro pads (there is no backing to fall off) and there isn't a backing plate I have to worry about grinding against spoilers and side mirrors. Plus they are double sided so I can bring one pad with me and I'll have a cutting pad on one side and a polishing pad on the other. I bought three blue Edge pads at the beginning of this year just in case I lost one or tore it or something, and I haven't had a reason to even use them unless I just wanted a clean pad to use and was too lazy to clean out the other one. They all three still look brand new after an entire year of use. I probably used one pad on a couple dozen cars this year alone and it still looks and performs like new. I can't say that about my velcro pads after that many uses. Most of them would never last that long. I've got nothing but great things to say about the Edge 2000 system and would highly recommend it if you are looking for pads. There is no downside to them that I have found. Sure they cost about twice as much as a velcro pad, but technically you are buying two pads when you get one, so it makes sense that it would cost more.

Edge Pads

Edge makes our pads for us. They're for a rotary, but the concept is the same. Sure beats the Velcro system we used to use.

We have wool on one side and foam on the other; I never have to put the pad down, which means I don't have to worry about getting it dirty.
