Removing wax buildup

I was washing my car yesterday and noticed a large amount of wax buildup on both undersides of the rocker panels.

There is so much that I can big my fingernail into it and pick it off piece by piece.

Is there a quick way of removing it without risking damage to the clearcoat/paint?

Dawn dishwashing liquid diluted in water or a clay bar might do it., but you'd need to wax again.

Was it excess wax that didn't get buffed off properly? A layer of wax is about 1/1000" thick. I don't see how you could have that much wax on your paint, unless you did something wrong. Got any pics of it?

It was one of those gimmicky, hose on liquid waxes that I applied sometime last year.

I'll try to get some pics posted soon if it doesn't rain or snow in the next couple of days.

If it's that thick you might need a solvent. Go to a paint/body shop and ask for some prep solvent that won't damage your paint.

At many auto parts stores that sell paint supplies, such as Pep Boys, you can get a 3M Adhesive and Wax Remover in either a spray or a can. It's safe for paints that are cured. Dupont also has a product called Prep-Sol. Read the precautions before use of either or similar products.

Before I resorted to that, I'd probably just go through those areas with some warm water with a high concentration of car wash and a detail brush and see if that takes care of it.

Then I'd clay and wax with quality products.
