Razor scratches on side window

I have a 2004 Tacoma ExtraCab SR5, bought from dealership on 02.28.08. After cleaning the abortion of a "detailing job" the dealer had done I have a big problem. When the genius at the dealership decided to remove a window sticker on exterior of glass he/she/it used a razor blade. Dry of course. Now I'm the proud owner of a cab window with fine vertical scratches. Covers an area about the size of sheet of paper 8.5 x 11. Very annoying.
Tried claying- no results.
Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Try some regular polish and see if that will remove some of it.

I have been able to polish scratches out of glass with a buffer and real aggressive polish. It depends on the glass though. Some cars have harder glass than others.

Check this link. http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t131917.html

wideawake,

Boy, I feel for you -- been there, done that myself, though it was at a Ford dealer and it was four windows.

To top it off, they brought in some bozo on the cheap from a mobile glass company and replaced them with non-Ford glass (which is Carlite, I think), and in drilling out the rivets in one door, he left rivet chunks and shavings to rattle around, the other door he dented from the inside, and one of the windows he bent the moulding.

PITA.

If it wasn't an end-of-model-year situation, the exact car I wanted, and I had no satisfactory alternative within 100 miles to trade it in on, I would have taken it back.

I won't even get into the 3-month fiasco with repairing the body panel on the door.

I guess I should add that if PB's suggestions don't help, you can get real glass polishing supplies from Eastwoodco.com or have a reputable shop try to do it. Last resort for me would be to let the dealer "fix" it.

But you probably ought to give the dealer a call and advise of the situation before too much time passes, and submit them a bill if you have an extraordinary expense. At some point it's a lesson learned and chalk up the expense of the polish or try to parlez that into some free service visits.

Next time I buy a new car I know I'm going to be fidgety about, I would never let the dealer do more than remove the protective coating from the exterior, but obviously that's not always feasible.

BTW, Claying will never fix scratches. Clay removes contaminants. A scratch is not a contaminant. To fix scratches you need something abrasive that will smooth out those scratches. Polish is what you need.

My suggestion, if you can't get it how you want it...smash it. Glass is covered under your comprehensive insurance with no deductable in Massachusetts.

Most glass places will come right to your work and fix the glass.

Guys, Thanks!

My plan of attack:

1. Notify dealer, really don't want them touching truck, at least the "in house detailer",
2. Try polishing- myself,
3. Try polishing- window/glass shop,
4. Spring loaded center punch.............http://www.galls.com/style.html?asso...og&style=FE514
