I'd say don't don't do it. Water gets where the water isn't supposed to go and you could have problems. Just get some Simple Green and spray away and use a brush to get to those hard to reach areas and those areas that need an extra cleaning. Remember to cover the electricals like the alternator, battery and fuse box. Spray, let it soak and spray with the garden hose and and that's it.

One more thing, we have a detailing forum here and that is where this thread will be moved to.

I had mine steam cleaned at a Ziebart place 2-3 years ago. Cost $50 at the time. I'd had a problem oil leak(s) for awhile, and there was so much oil on the engine you couldn't tell where it was coming from for sure. My mechanic friend suggested the steam clean to make it easier to pinpoint the leak(s). They cleaned from the top, then put it on the lift and cleaned from the bottom as well. It was VERY clean when they finished, and I had no problems with it. (Got the oil leak fixed too )

I've never really needed to steam clean an engine. I've always been able to get em clean with chemical cleaners, a couple brushes, and a water hose.

If your engine is real nasty spray some kerosene on the greasy areas, and then hose off. Only do this on an engine that isn't hot.
