Clay Bar

Are all clay bars created equal?

If not, what are the better ones and why?

Yes there are different firmness's of clay, but most people can't tell the difference. A firm clay is more agressive. IMO it doesnt matter much.

I almost exclusively use only Mothers, and I've heard sketchy things about the Zaino clay, but I'm not sure the things I heard were very well-founded.

Your safest buy is getting an over-the-counter clay, and the best deal on that is found at (cough) Wal-Mart.

Clay Bar Quality

There's actually very little difference in quality among clays as there are only a couple producers of the stuff. The difference is in how agressive the claybar is. Most over the counter stuff is the same, but there are some variations. If your concerned do a google search. I don't recall all the variations between labels but there can be real differences.

Contrary to popular belief, clay bars don't just make impurities stick to its surface. Clay bars are actually a very fine abrassive, with various levels of grit.

Hope that help some

Clay Magic is not so well known to consumers, but it is a respectable fine grade clay product. You get the 100 gram clay and the lubricant so it's a bare-bones kit without anything you don't need and that also brings the price to the lowest on the shelf (at least at AutoZone which is about the only major chain that I know sells it).

The Mothers kit is a medium-grade clay, and it's a good deal at Wal-Mart price and includes the detailer and cleaner wax. This is my favorite.

I haven't tried the new Meguiar's clay kit, but supposedly it's better than their last attempts though I don't know if it's fine or medium.

I may try Clay Magic. I hear it is one of the better clays and I might be able to get it at Autozone. Another very good clay seems to be from Griot'sGarage. (http://www.griotsgarage.com/)

Here are two very interesting sites for those interested in this stuff
