car detailing.. swirl mark removal

i've been trying to remove the swirl marks from my car.. i've tried rubbing compound and "turtle wax scratch and swirl mark remover". None of these products are working. What i've been doing is the following:

- applying the above chemicals (1 at a time) with a random orbital using a foam pad

- removing with the orbital using a soft terry cloth pad

these procedures appear to add more swirl marks (spider webbed shaped) onto my car.. whats going on? What am i doing wrong?

the orbital im using is this one from canadian tire.. not an expensive one:

Rubbing compound is more aggressive than polishing compound...

Use rubbing compound first, preferably with a wool pad or a separate foam pad. This will take out the more major swirl marks and minor scratches. Then, follow up with polishing compound, which is a finer grit than rubbing compound, and go over the areas with it using a new foam pad.

Buy 3M Rubbing Compound and 3M Swirl Mark Remover. They work pretty well for me. They come in black bottles at pepboys.

Liquid Ebony is the best swirl mark remover out there. I've used it on a few black cars I had. It rocks.

quixx works quite well on swirls, but is quite expensive...$15 bucks for a .8 oz. tube of both components.

it's the only one i've tried that has actually done anything, but i haven't tried this liquid ebony stuff...
