How do I get rid of brake dust?

I want to get rid of the break dust that is caked onto my rims, what product should I buy or home remedy should I make? Is there a particular method I should use?

On some ceramic brake dust, I used undiluted Simple Green, and dollar store "Scotchbrite" style scrub pads. The ones I get are not even close to how aggressive the real Scotchbrite pads are. Not an instant remover, but worked, with no damage to the alloys on a 2003 Civic.

Try Eagle1 All Wheel & Tire Cleaner. Spray on, agitate with a gentle brush if necessary, and hose off. Total time, 30-60 seconds. Repeat if necessary.

Avoid the use of scrubbers, as they will abrade the clearcoat on your wheels.

Use a product like FX Spray Wax or an instant detailer once they're clean -- it'll help repel the dust.

P21S Wheel Gel is what I use. Pricey but with expensive wheels, better to use that instead of an acid/base cleaner. This is pH neutral and is pretty much guaranteed not to hurt your wheels with the gel alone. Its spray, dwell for 10 minutes, use a boars hair brush to agitate, then rinse. Repeat as necessary

Hmm...seems too easy, have you tried it yourself? And I don't want to break the bank either. I guess I'll try the simple green method, thanks!

It is usually that easy. Same with Megs Hot Rim stuff. Its just that they are slightly acidic thats all....

Simple Green may also mess with your brake pads so be wary of that too. Thats why I mentioned a pH neutral substance. Either way, good luck!

I don't think I understand, unless I don't put enough elbow grease into it, this stuff is pretty caked on.

I always use Simple Green and a sponge with a 'scrubby' on it. I polish my rims too, so most of the time brake dust just wipes off. Whitewall booster stuff is good too, but don't let it sit for any length of time. Wear gloves and wipe off and then rinse, rinse, rinse.

After cleaning, I highly suggest putting some polish on the wheels. Makes cleaning next time a breeze.

The Eagle1 is alkaline, not acidic (and there's several types of acid, some scarier than others), but one should be careful not to over use any wheel cleaner no matter the pH.

The Eagle1 is the best I've tried out of about 8 popular brands (incluiding P21s) on baked-on brake dust, though you may need to use a brush to get through the bad stuff -- since you didn't show a photo, we've got little to go on.

Fact is, if you have baked-on brake dust, it's going to be tough either way, and my opinion is that sometimes you have to use a strong cleaner in a case like this where hopefully you can dissolve the brake dust. Scouring your way through brake dust is going to do more harm than good -- that is unless you've permanently damaged the clearcoat, but you won't know until you try.

Once you get them clean, keep them clean with a pure wax, spray wax or detailer to protect them, and wash them often.

Just what I was looking for! How will I know if my clear coat is destroyed?

I tried using one of those pads today along with my super clean degreaser product, it proved to be successful but I feared taking the clear coat off my wheels, how do I tell if the clear coat is missing, I only did this on one rim so that I wouldn't ruin all of them if I damaged it.

I washed my car a week later and I looked to see if the scrub pads helped at all. Unfortunately they took off a lot of clear coat and paint, yikes, very bad idea, please don't try this, I will try to put up pictures soon! I'm glad I only did it on one wheel!

Proof that not all suggestions are useful or good.

It's unfortunate to hear that.

Post up pics of the damage, if it's bad enough you might have to get the wheel refinished at a shop.
