Waxing

sxlostv1, I love that blue! That's the color of my 98 Corolla LE. I'm probably going to trade it in soon on a newer corolla, but I wonder, Do you guys wax your cars? I was told when I bought the car that it never needed waxed. Now the paint is rather dull and I'm wondering if it would help.

Unhappy

usually the only person who says that is the "extras" salesman who tries to sell you the infamous and very expensive paint protection after you agree to buy a new car.

You can buy a $10-$20 bottle of good paint sealant and get the same results on a new car, or *after* you properly clean and prepare any non-new paint: 1)wash, 2) clay-bar, 3) possibly paint cleaner if paint/surface is not in good condition 4) Glaze (sometimes called Polish) to give deep wet-look, 5) good sealant or wax.

Wash weekly/monthly, re-wax (or re-sealant) every 3 or 4 months, and you car will look great forever. Anyone who claims you never need to wax simply does not know what they are talking about.

If you bought the car in '98 and haven't done any paint care since then, you'll definitely want to do more than just wax it as searle indicated.

At the very least you'll want to use a good cleaner/wax on it, but I have no doubt you'd benefit greatly from claying and a good one or two step machine polishing.

If that level of effort is beyond what you want to do, there are some good detailers in the Columbus area that post regularly on autopia.org. I'd hook up with one of them and for a couple hundred bucks they could probably make your car look new again.

Of course that's taking into consideration the condition of your car. Since you haven't posted any pics, it's hard to know exactly how bad it is.

Oh, and yeah, that "never needs waxing" line is BS. There is no wax, sealant, etc., that can be applied by the dealer or anyone else that will last longer than a few months.
