Use a clay bar before you do anything. Those things do wonders. I'd be a little nervous using all the cutters and pre polish and all that crap. I clay bar mine twice a year and wax it every month with Meguires tech wax. My truck looks great for being 4 years old and the socal sun beating on it every. Wax is like motor oil. Your going to get a hundred different opions on whats best.

First off read read and read here. http://www.autogeek.net/detailingtips.html
Then become a member and read the forums. http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/...tailing-forums

What you want to do is get a quality soap wash, dry, clay, polish (DA polisher works great and is the most user friendly), seal, then wax. Good luck!

Exclamation Wanring: Cut Polishes are not for routine paint care/cleaning

These are *MUCH* more abrassive than other end-consumer paint cleaner products. For "normal" paint cleanup, wash then claybar, then use a mild cleaner (like SwirlX).

Cut Polishes are *NOT* for routine car care. You have said nothing about why you need to use them. What sort of paint defects are you trying to repair? And, by hand or machine, and what sort of pads?

Cut Polishes are, by design, made to remove some of the surface paint/clearCoat. Their aggressive action is much increased by machine use (rather than by hand), and their aggressive action is much increased by using more aggressive pads (especially wool pads).

If you are not familiar with them (which you question implies), you should likely stay away from them. In no case should you use them for normal "paint cleaning" (not even for light swirl or oxidation removal), they are for carefully controlled serious defect removal,

Amen.

Rubbing compound should be outlawed. It's way too aggressive...even something as mild as Meguiar's M205 would take off that oxidation just fine with a wool pad and a rotary. Using M105 would be super-easy.

"The trick is to...uh...balance the amount you are taking off with the amount of paint you have on".

Yes, that is the trick, but how does one do this? He doesn't tell us; he just warns us that seeing metal after you buff would confirm that you don't "know the trick".

One way to not polish down to the metal is not do use a diminishing abrasive compound (see comments above).

The water "activates the compound"? Do you mean if we don't add water, it doesn't work?

Also, he recommended angling the pad to get into the cracks and crevices? That's a good way to burn through an edge!

"Never hold the pad flat"? Wrong again. To get a swirl-free finish, you need to come down off the edge.

I stopped the video after that.

That guy obviously doesn't know how to use a rotary or the fundamentals of detailing in that video.
