My first car, need some advice about painting it.

I just bought a used 2001 Toyota Camry. It's a dark red color and has two gold pinstripes down the side. This is the first car I have ever owned and I would like to paint it. I plan on painting the whole thing white, tinting the windows, and painting the rims black.

I am not really too familiar with different types of paint, or the process of how to layer the paint and prep the car.

I would appreciate any advice on what would be the best way to accomplish this by an inexperienced painter. I also want to avoid wrecking my car since I just bought it. I don't have enough money to get it done professionally.

I can provide more info if needed.

Thanks,
Dustin

make sure you read the forum that this came from first. I think they have switched from Rustoleum to a marine paint. Let us know how this turns out for you!

if you are going to paint it yourself, get a hold of a compressor and a spray gun. harbor freight tools sells crazy cheap spray guns. if you cant get one, then foam roll the paint on. last option is to use a rattle can, if you do, its going to be obvious.

if your car has been waxed recently, you gotta get rid of all of that before you do any sanding and so on. take your time, dont rush. Your car isnt old or worthless so dont halfass the paintjob and make it go from boring oem to WTF went wrong? if you want to go to a scrapyard and get a hood or fender or trunk lid to practice on it's not a bad idea. sucks to mess up your daily driver while trying to go cheap. also, dont skimp out on sandpaper and automotive tape dude. wash your car often in between coats, dirt and dust will fuck a DIY paintjob up BAD. If you can jimmy rig some sort of paintbooth do so, dont park under a tree.

I rattle canned my car, but i went flat black so i wasnt going for perfection, was just going for rustproofing. there are some parts that look damn good and there are some spots where the spray pattern went to hell. pluss everything i own, bikes, bicycles, cars, 4x4s gets painted flat black lol.
