Question Glass Scratch Remover

Just bought a used 2000 Corolla. The previous owner allowed the old wiper scratch through the glass leaving an unsightly mark on the windshield.

Does anybody know how to polish glass? Are there any DIY (do-it-yourself) compounds or solutions out there?

Thanks.

^ no, that would only work for light light scratches, because hte toothpaste basically works like compound, and it can smooth things out

eep

a friend recently did a repair on a windshield star with one of those fix-it kits. after it was done you just use a blade to scrape off any of the polymer thats on the surface. in wondering if i squirted a bit on the scratch if it would fill it in. then after it cured just remove the excess, hmm. i had a feeling if i tried to polish it out i would frost the glass unless i got a professional kit

I forget the name of the kit I picked up the other day. It was made by a lens polishing company. It had 3 pads of mild abrasives used to gently polish away those wiper scratches and pitting. Less than $10. works great!

Cool

Thanks to all your comments. I brought the car to Auto Glass Center in Iowa City, and they assessed the wiper marks as "unpolishable". According to them, forcibly polishing the scratches would result in windshield distortion. They suggested replacing the whole windshield instead at a price of $239.00 to $289.00 (with border). I don't think it will be covered by my insurance.

I still believe that the scratches can be polished without distorting the windshield. When I was in the Philippines, I had a Corolla with wiper marks that were manually buffed out for only Php 350.00 ($7.00)! I just don't know the name of the compound that was used, and where to get them.

Hey mdmm,

Look into your local glass specialist; you know a place that replaces broken windshields. They might be able to repair scratched glass, or at least know somebody that does!

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Thanks,

Tool that will get scratches out of glass

I had scratches on the windshield of my wife's sienna that were removed with the GlassRenu Scratch removal system. My buddy in southern California swears by it, and the results are amazing. just my two cents. You can see their video's at www.glassrenu.com
