the interval is 60k miles. The adjustment takes up the slack that is created by component wear i.e. camshaft, valve tip, lifter wear etc...

The use of Mobil 1 or amsoil will greatly reduce if not eliminate wear of this nature and you won't hear the clickety-clack sound when its cold as often. I have 234k on my camry (94) and the valves have never been touched, the only time the valve cover has been off was for me to paint it and replace the o-ring.

The oil isn't really more expesive if you run it 10k between changes.
