1988 Toyota Camry V6 Seatbelt Issue

I have looked on this forum and around the Web a bit and have been unable to come up with an answer. I am hoping you can help.

I have a 1988 Toyota Camry V6 with over 200K. A month or two ago my automatic seatbelt on the driver-side only, began having the following problem:

It would not fully move forward (disengage) in the track after I opened the door. I discovered that if I held the door open just a hair, it would actually fully disengage. As soon as I shut the door it would move all the way up the track and engage.

Because of this, I think it may be a switch issue. I have seen two black buttons on the rear side of the door frame, but this cannot be it because I press them and nothing happens. I do believe one may have something to do with the door, one is the light, no doubt.

My question is if anyone knows how this system works. Is there something inside of the door that tells the seatbelt when to engage? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Spencer

^ My dad had the same problem with his, way back in the day. It's been like 7 years since I've been on one. But i did the same thing JL did. I played with it and it worked for the next year till we sold that car.

Unfortunately No Dice

I tried this before to no avail. But just went and tried again. I shut doors, turned the key, pulled the little panel off, and rolled the wheel. Darn. Any other ideas?

Thanks,
-Spencer

well, the switches in the door dont really do anything, cause there are several switches for it all. There is a computer for the seatbelts under the center console, that may have something wrong with it. you could go to a junk yard and pull one out, see if that fixes it. the wheel that you guys are talking about is the motor for the seat belt, it might be dead, or you could have a short somewhere along the line..it could be a lot of things really.
