Canada 90 Camry: problems re-starting in cold weather

My '90 Camry is having problems during the winter months. It generally starts great when it's cold, however, if I shut the engine off and let it sit for 20 minutes to 5-6 hours, when I start it again the engine will choke out and die. I have to pump the gas for a few minutes to try and keep the car idling. After being shut down for 8 hours or so (the whole workday, or overnight) it'll start just fine. The problem started last January and I took it to my regular mechanic (not a toyota specialist) and he couldn't figure it out. They replaced the fuel regulator to see what would happen (a friend of mine goes to the same mechanic and had a similar problem...only his acted up when the temperature warmed...and the fuel regulator did the trick).

Has anyone dealt with this type of problem before?

My '91 is very sluggish cranking when COLD.. Then after it cranks and warms up, just bump the key and it fires right up the rest of the day. My check engine light is on, and I guess I will plug her up and see what it is. I guess an O2 sensor, or EGR valve could cause sluggish starting when cold.. Is your check engine light on?

No, my check engine light is off. The engine turns over just fine when I start it, but it dies shortly after. It seems as if it's not getting enough fuel? Once it warms up and I put it in drive, I can have the accelerator to the ground, but it won't speed up past 20 km/hr. After a minute or two like that, the car will slowly pick up speed and will drive just fine.

Some things to check.

1. IAC (idle air control) valve.

2. Cold start injector.

3. Start injector time switch.

4. ECT (engine coolant temp) sensor.

Bill I believe 88le was replying to catfisher! If you have a cold CRANKING problem you have a totally different problem that should be addressed in a different thread! But I would have your battery checked!
