91 Camry wagon transmission question

Ok guys,

I need your opinion here. I have a 1991 Toyota Camry wagon with apporx. 120,000 miles on a 4-cylinder however it runs great. This is a car that I was buying off my brother for $800.00 for my wife to get back and forth to work with. When he gave it to me it needed tires, an inspection. a passenger side axle and breaks (rotors and pads) which are all done. It still does need front struts and some body-work (typical Toyota rot).

Here’s the problem. This is my first foreign car. I know nothing about it. When I received it the transmission was slipping in reverse. Well reverse is now completely blown and the car isn’t worth the $1200.00 tranny re-build that my shop wants so my questions are:
  • Would it be worth putting a used tranny in it? I think I can get one for around $300.00 - $350.00. What should I look for as far as signs of abuse?
  • Are their different transmissions for this vehicle? Am I going to have to look for a specific model number and if so what would it be?
  • Can anyone tell me what type of tranny I have by the following info:
4-door wagon not sedan

1991 but sticker says manufactured in 1990

4-cylinder

Automatic with overdrive. Button is on the shifter.

Also has a button to switch from performance to gas economy.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Jay

I'll give you $400 for it and put in a new transimssion.

If you like it, spend the $1200 on a $1000 car.
If not....the $1200 gets you another $1000 car plus $200 for restaurants.....

That's my opinion anyway.

let me know if you want that $400!

i cant remember if they came from the factory with it but the gen2 camry with both 4 and 6 cyl motors can mate to it, the drive axles are another story, he is better off getting one from a 4 cyl car to avoid changing anything else
