'91 Engine problem

Does anyone have any advice? Here's the rundown:
I was on the highway doing 70mph, when the check engine light came on and the car died.
The battery has plenty of juice left.
The starter cranks just fine.
I tested electrical, and the distributor gets power.
When I turn the belts by hand, everything looks sound.
I removed the distributor unit, and found no broken gears, the shaft spins ok.
However, the piece that the distributor coupling attaches to inside the engine does not rotate when the drive belt does.

Am I completely missing something?
I checked all of the fuses (except for the ones that aren't transparent) and they are fine.

If I am due for some major mechanical work, would it be worth my money to go for a new (or reconditioned) engine?

Can I get mounts for a more powerful engine? I figure if I'm going to do any major modding now might be a good time to start.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!!!!!
thanks -tim

I am assuming you mean the camshaft is not rotating when you turn the engine over. The Distributor is run by the Cam. IF this is the case then the Timing belt is shot probably. Put the distributor back in and take the cap off. When you rotate the engine now does the rotora spin in the distributor. If not then the belt is broken and time to replace it. IF the car was running good before this happened I would jsut replace the belt and anything else that might need it behind the cover and keep drivng it. Check the water pump, tensioner, idler and all seals.

Its the timing belt. Take off the top cam cover plastic part to be 100% sure. Your motor is fine. Replace the timing belt, seals and water pump while you are in there.

Good luck.
