89 camry stalling while driving

The car just shuts off while drving and I could easily get rear ended

All I did to the car was change oil .. then cleaned out the engine with degreaser....

The car would start up and idle fine but after driving it for awhile it would just shake then shut off. the coolant is at the right level and so is all the other fluids. Why would it just turn off while driving and keeping the gas on the pedle?

Its not your altenator. It sounds like it could be the coolant temperature sesor, i've heard here that it can cause your engine to die while the engine is fully warmed up. Another thing that might be happening is that your fuel pump is faulty which means that it quits when it wants to and then start working again later. Have you changed your plugs lately?

I probably got the sparks wet when rinsing off the degreaser

Maybe it's the plugs since it's been so long since I've gotten them changed.

When it starts to die down I'd move the automatic into Neutral ..tap the gas a bit.. then put it back into Drive and it stays on okay.. but driving a car that just dies isn't so fun having the feeling of getting rear ended

Erik,

If you still aren't having any luck, check for carbon tracks under the distributor cap. I've had that problem in the past after spraying water on an engine.

Its your ignition coil...

If you can keep it dry, you'll be fine. If it gets wet, it shorts out through the hairline cracks that develop on them over time. This is a standard problem on the gen2 Camrys.

There are two solutions:

Don't get the engine bay wet

or...

Get a new ignition coil. Its inside the distributor cap.
