Hey guys I was racking my brain to find another group buy project that will be quick and painless. I came up with the carbon fiber hood idea. First of all I know that this has been done and is still in the process. If I get enough people however then this buy will get done before the other one finishes. Check out the e-mail I got back from one of the several companies I sent letters to.
Matt,
Sure, hoods are always welcome for projects. Since the 87-91 Camry hood is practically flat stock this is something I feel pretty confident I can do w/o getting hands on the hood first. As far as pricing goes, there isnt much give.
1 Hood = $699 + shipping
2-5 Hoods = $599 + shipping
5+ Hood = $575 + shipping
When making the part I will also need:
Someone to ship a hood to me
Someone locally to GR, MI to “donate” a hood
Someone or collectively reimburse me for a hood that I buy
Turnaround time on this could be in the 3-4 week range for the first part to come out. Also, keep in mind these are race ready hoods that are:
Two layer 20 oz carbon fiber
Nomex homeycomb core
Vacuum bagged and hardened w/ epoxy
Requires 4 hood pins
No hinges
Weighs in the 7-10 lbs range
Obviously there is no min buy and no extra charge if someone ships a hood that has custom work like a hood scoop done. If this is for a business then it can be private labeled and exclusive to just the owner of the mold.
Let me know if there are any other questions you may have or if there is anything else I can help you with. Thanks,
How come you guys arent showing any love to my post? If you are interested let me know. FYI this is only the first offer I got. There will be more to come... I am hoping to have vents put on the hoods...What do you guys think? Let me know whats up
Matt
It sounds good but I definitely don't anywhere close to that much money laying around right now. BTW do you have pictures of the EL CAI or have you not gotten it yet?

good to see that there are companies out there willing to do some custom jobs. by the sounds of it... they're willing to do other applications as well.
why there's no huge response to your post is probably the price. i'm assuming the price you posted was in USD. well at $600 USD that will end up at $1G CAD when all is said and done. for a hood.
I haven't got the CAI yet but I should have it by the holidays..This only the first quote on hoods so yeah dont be discouraged. I will dig deeper and try to get it cheaper...Hey a rhyme...I still have more companies that are getting back to me...So sit tight kiddies I will see what I can do..
peace out
Matt

Just a note to everyone... It looks like these hoods will not hing like the stock ones. you will have to undo for pins and lift the hood off to get to the engine. Kinda cool, kinda a pain (if you are at a gas station or something). But, it sounds like it would be really light.
Matt, keep searching... I know you can find a better price! 8)

Thanks for all your interest and support guys. I am sure I can find a better price. Maybe at a local carbon fiber shop? Who knows. I am on the case and I will try to hook you guys up... I know that no one shows us Gen 2 owners any love so we gotta make some of it on our own. I will let you guys know how it goes.
Late,
Matt
Still working on it guys. I will try to get hooked up with some Carbon fiber dudes when I am back in Nor Cal. Check out my post about fiberglass hoods.
