Half Shaft Removal Passenger Side 1991 Camry

Hey Guys,

I am in the process of doing the rear main seal on the camry and I am at tear down mode. I got the driver's side half shaft out and I am working on the passenger side. I removed a snap ring and the bolts on the bearing on the shaft. I have beat the crap out of the thing to get it out of the transmission, then bet the crap out of it at the spot to seperate the half shaft from the bearing...is there something I might be missing. this is the only thing stopping me from dropping the transmission.

Thanks,

Katie

Haven't done it myself but I think there's a lock bolt on that side. Look for one at a right angle to the shaft near the diff. (Or repost and tell them your a girl- you'll probalby get offers to come do it for you! )

bolt

Yes there is a lock bolt that you have to remove then once you remove the snap ring firmly grasp the inner shaft and pull it out.

ball joints and tie rods

hey all,

Well I got my new drivers side axle in today after breaking 3- 3/8" ratchet wrenches and splitting a 17MM socket on one ball joint nut! I had to buy a 1/2" 17MM socket and use my 17" breaker bar with the 2FT handle of my floor jack on the end to get the leverage to break the nut loose! THe breaker bar was bending before the nut cracked loose!
Other problem I ran into was when I put the spring clamp over the boot after greasing; the crimp happened to line up with a bolt hole and I didnt realise it until the bolt head snagged on it when installing, it was the last bolt of the 6 too! Weird. Iam going to try and grab it with the crimping tool and turn rotate the clamp just enough to get the bolt past.

Anyway that was most of my weekend couldnt finish or start the other side because it started raining! Few questions: I bought new TRW lower balljoints, are these already greased? Or do I need to fill them? Also I posted earlier regarding the tie rod ends and the ones advanced auto sold me dont have a threaded rod on them?? Its just what looks like a ball joint and there is a long bolt totally seperate, it is not a one piece tie rod end that screws onto the tie rod? I think it's the wrong part.

I found a picture that kind of shows where the lock bolt is and I believe I have removed that...I have also removed the ring. So now I pry against the bearing and half shaft to remove the half shaft. Or is their a better way to get the whole assembly out of there? Any helpful information appreciated like I said I have hammered on this thing and it hasn't budged.

Thanks!

Katie

IT is supposed to pull right out after the lock bolt and snap ring are removed, it will probably be in there pretty good though so I woulndt expect that it slided right out. My manual shows that you grasp it and pull it out. It should slide straight out. I wouldnt recommend hammering on it ,you could hurt a bearing.

Perhaps a slide hammer would help.

Just a suggestion.

Good luck!

Unbolt the mount from the back of the block. Then remove the axle from the tranny.

94 Camry I4: Pass side = PITA, carrier bearing rusts to carrier, lots of info on this in forum. I myself was unable to remove the mount, but several people have...better men/women than I...I ended up splicing the new one to the old at the inside joint. BUT, my boots were just cracked, not torn, so my CV joints were not contaminated, just a little worn I would think..I just kind of gave up and took the easy way out, not really the way to go...tried everything on that thing for days! I notice my Solara has this same design...great. A woman in tear-down mode, got to love that! Katie, how about teaching my wife, I could use some help... 4 cars - 1 person.

Yeah I have tried everything..I might try a slide hammer. i just hate to buy something I may never use again. I won't mess with the car again until this weekend so i will make sure that I removed everything, but I swore I have. This isn't the first time I have removed half shafts and its the only one giving me such a headache.

Well I am not to far behind you 3-cars 1 person here. Tell your wife, It doesn't take skill to work on a car-just a person that is willing to get a little dirty.

You may be able to wrap a chain around it and bolt the links together (or use a stout rope). Then put some weight on the other end and 'jerk', pull, yank- whatever. (Poor man's slidehammer.)

Exclamation

You can pick up a perfectly functional slide-hammer at Harbor Freight pretty reasonably.

Cheers!
