Gen1 Decrease in power on highway - 86 Camry

The car: 1986 Camry automatic, 103,000 miles

The problem: around town, the car works great. On the highway, usually around 55 - 60 mph, the car will act like it doesn't want to go any faster, and will actually decrease in speed even though the accelerator is pushed down all the way. The other day the car kept decreasing in speed until it finally died. Sometimes it works fine. Had it out on the highway a little while ago with no problem.

The engine has been checked by a mechanic, and seems to be fine. The transmission checks out fine. I had the backpressure checked thinking it might have a clogged catalytic converter. The pressure checked out just a little above normal, but nothing to worry about according to the tech. I plan to have the fuel filter checked, just to make sure it is not getting clogged.

Since I am new to Camrys (and Toyotas in general), is there something else I should have checked?

Thanks for any help!

What about the other good stuff? Plugs, airfilter, and wires? f you don't know when the fuel filter was replaced last just replace it there is no checking it. I think the coil can also cause problems.

Thanks for the reply. The plugs, wires etc. checked out ok. I'll add the coil to the list.

Thanks again . . .
