2nd Generation CV Joints on an 87' Camry

I've known my that I need new CV joints for a while now. The car screeches when I turn shimmys from side to side when going under 25mph. I'm to broke to bring it to a mechanic to have them installed. My question is how difficult is this job to complete? and will I need any special tools? On a side note my mechanical experiance is limited but a friend of mine has a good amount of experiance and he will be there with me.

You'll need a 30mm socket for the axle nut, and patience... along with a normal set of tools. Nothing to crazy to change the axle.

Are you sure that your axles are going? They normally make a clicking/poping noise, but don't affect handling much. Check if the boots are busted, and check your bushings, ball joints and other parts for wear.

The boots on the joints have been torn for a while now. But, it turns out that the shimmying was being caused by a messed up tire. I could see the metal bands in the tire for about a third of the way around it. It was about a 3 inch wide strip with no tread. I put my spare on and the shimmy went away
thanks
