'89 3S-FE no start. help diagnose

First post...

Trying to help brother with his Camry "no start" problem. Getting no spark after performing timming belt change.

using Haynes manual. I determined correct timming. turned engine 2-3 times and timming marks look good.

I then moved to check Pick up coil and I get strange resulst.. Checking for resistance, I get a reading for a second and then it dissapears from the screen (digital meter). Both combinations (G,G- & NE,G-) give me the same results. Both flahs readings between 130- 180 but dissapear after a second.

I then checked the coil and I get the following:

Primary coil resistance: 0.8
Secondary coil resistance: 9.4

Any help you guys can throw my way is greatly appreciated.

I'm mostly familiar with "domestic Ford" engines and am having a difficult time with this car.

Thanks in advance for the help.

It might be your ignitor. My old 1988 Camry with a 3SFE had that problem, it would crank and crank without turning over. This happened at roughly 156K miles and luckily in my driveway.

Had that replaced, and had no starting troubles since then until I sold the car at 210K miles.

It looks like a little silver box directly to the side of the battery.

Hope this helps, good luck!
