Easy fix to steering problem '91

I have 1 '91 Camry with 295k miles on it. When turning the wheel, I would encounter pretty firm resistance and then it would free up, easy-hard, easy-hard, easy-hard. I thought it was a problem with the pinion gear on the rack, but on a whim had a look at the universal joint on the end of the steering shaft at the rack input. Everything looked normal, but I lubed it with some oil and problem fixed!!! Thought I'd pass it on. Sure was easier than replacing the rack. Cheaper too!

This post is exactly what I was looking for, thank heavens for the search feature and this forum! I already replaced the P/S pump because it was making the typical "failure" noises, but it didn't fix the steering problem. I will take a look at it this weekend and report back!

Fixed! Well temporarily atleast. That steering knuckle is on her last leg, but hanging in there. I can feel all road feedback and the steering wheel wanders a bit, but the hard steering is gone. Thanks to fabbb for an easy fix.
