1st & 2nd Generation (1983–1986 & 1987-1991)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1983-1986 & 1987-1991.
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I heard a report that the 89 Camry was the most stolen car in America last year. The 91 Camry came in 3rd and the 94 came in 5th or something. I am not taking anything away from them (89 & 91 models) but the design was boxy. Something about the parts? Is there any specific reason why 89 Camry was #1?
Mainly because the parts are in high demand and that it is was the chop down. Although that is slightly in acuratre. Accorrding to both NIS (National Insurance Insitute) complies the most reliable date which they get irectly from the insurance companies.
The Accord and Civics are the top two, followed by the camry and then the old style VW rabbits.

Camrys from those years are plentiful, easy to steal, and parts are worth a lot. Also, as part of that report, the stolen car has to be considered a total loss - and because of that the older less expensive cars get marked that way more often. All those factors together make it the most stolen car in american. (but not highest amount per car on the road)

And the lock cylinders on the doors are easy to break, and its easy to use a slim jim to break in also... kinda sucks.

i dont know if my car is FUked or what but my 1990 camry igniton allows you to easilky remove the key when the car is on. i can drive without a key and freak my freinds out!
^^ my parents 91 dx could do that! it was great fun. my buddies car could do that to, cept this one time he crashed and the car was on a steep hill, and the keys fell out but the engine was still runing, so he had to find the keys before he could turn it off, i guess thats y there sposed to be loked in there
Does anyone know how to get into a 89 toyota Camry i wrecked mine.. and locked the door. now, i cannot get back into my car to gett my things out to sell it. Any sugestions would be helpful. I cannoot afford to pay a lock smith as well. since you all have camrys is it posssible to open it even though it has power windows and locks. Anything will help thanks in advance chelsey

Get a AAA account.
Anyone with knowledge of a slim jim can get right into a Camry. Call up any tow service and they should do it for reasonably cheap.

+1 on the easy to steal factor...im even more convinced that I could get into any Gen 2 camry on the street since I have owned mine!
Thats also why im thankful that my car came with a noisemaker (aka alarm) b/c im usually within hearing distance. I still think the best theft deterrent is the club.

Also the reason the Mercury Marauder made the list a couple years ago.
(for those who don't know its a Mercury Grand Marquis w/police suspension and a 32V similar to the Mustang Cobra motor, limited production veh)
