2nd Generation Wiring Help w/ ES250 Fog Light Switch

Hey guys,

As some of you may know I have changed the dash and center console to that of a ES250. The ES250 dash has a foglight button. I want to hook this button up to the foglights. I already have a bosch relay I plan to use but I need to know what to do with the wires on the button. Any help would be appreciated. There are 4 wires:
Green Wire –
Red and Blue Wire –
Green and Orange Wire –
Red and Black Wire –

Thanks in advance fellas.

Matt

Hey Matt, is the switch a momentary contact or an ON/OFF type with different positions? This can make a huge difference in how it needs to be wired. If it's a momentary contact button, it will require some sort of latching relay setup, utilizing multiple relays. Will be much simpler if it's a regular ON/OFF type switch. If it's a momentary contact, I've got a latching relay schematic I can post for you (gotta find it on my other computer though). It's certainly not rocket science, but it is more complicated than a single relay.

An OEM fog light setup is more complex in that it has to kill the fogs if the high-beams are on.

I'm guessing that 2 of the wires control the lights, while the other 2 probably illuminate the switch when the regular lights are turned on.

yeah...the switch definitely has a light. When you push the button it clicks and stays indented...when you push it again it pops back into normal position (so I am guessing this is an ON/OFF switch). Let me know where I should go from here.

Thanks!

Good, that will make things easier for you. Basically, your on/off switch will supply power to the relay coil. When the relay in energized, that will act as your H.D. switch to supply the higher current to the lights. How you wire it up will depend on a couple different things. If you want your fogs to turn off when your ignition is off (highly recommended), then you will want to run power from a switched source (on my '91 the cig. lighter is switched off with the ignition, so that would be a convenient place to grab power to the switch).

Assuming you tap into the cig. lighter wire for power, you will tap into both wires, hot and ground. Next, you'll have to determine which wires are for illumination, and which are for the actual switch. The hot wire will go from your cig. lighter to one side of the switch. The other switch wire will go to one of the energizing coil connectors on the relay. The other coil connector will go to the ground wire from the cig. lighter. At this point, you should be able to flip the switch and hear the relay click on. This is your secondary circuit, and it's complete. BTW, you may want to mount the relay under the hood, close to where you will be tapping into your higher current power for the lights.
The other 2 wires from the switch, assuming they are for illumination, can be hooked up to any source that will give power when you turn your regular lights on. I think there is a light near the ash tray, you could tap into that.

BTW: Sorry if this is too elementary, I didn't know what level of help you needed. Please let me know if this is not clear, or if you need additional info on hooking up the primary circuit for the lights. I'm not necessarily a Toyota expert, but I've done a LOT of fog light wiring.

It could be this or it reversed around but it wil be something like....

Red/Blue and Red/Black = Circuit Switch
Green and Green/Orange = LED Source

Best way to test which one it is is to connect a multimeter to Red/Blue and Red/Black, press the button and see if the circuit "connects".

But in any case, Red/Blue would go to your source, (ie. illumination wire behind the dash), the Red/Black would go to your relay. The Green would go to a 12V source (probobly illumination wire again) and the Green/Orange would go to Ground.

But yeah, thats the idea, you just have to figure out which wire is for what..and going by Toyota's usual color coding, the main body wire color are usually paired, and they change the stripe color to denote a different function. (eg. Red = ECU + and Red/Black = ECU - [example only haha]).
