Differential lube

While getting my engine ready to install, I noticed oil leaking out of axle holes in the differential. It certainly appears to be heavy 90w gear oil. The book calls for Dexron II in the diff.

Can anybody tell me if the two are interchangeable or did the last owner put the wrong stuff in or what. Should I drain the 90w or just refill it or should I replace it with Dexron II?

Thanks
Dale

90W gear oil is not the same as Dexron II ATF. Gear oil is a lot thicker.

I would drain it as best you can, then refill with Dexron II or III ATF.

For the differential, Toyota seems to call out whatever the transmission uses. If a manual trans this is 75-90W. If an automatic this is whatever the trans uses, such as Dexron.
