88 camry

I have an 88 Camry that I have been working on off and on for a while now. When i got the car I was told that the cooling fan didnt work and that the temp sensor was bad also. It wasnt charging and some times would just klick when you tried to start it. So I replace the batt. and everything is working except now when it worms up the idle goes up and down rather speraticly. So I decide to mess with it and put a new distributore in it because it controls the fuel injectores. It fixed the problem for a hole five minutes and it starts doing it again but slower this time. So I decide to mess with it and end up adjusting the throtle position sensor until it runs at a consistant idle. Now I go to check the timing and have to adjust it all the way down and it still has five deg. to go. So my question is should I look into the timing belt and did I find my anitial problem with the throtle position sensor or could I have adjusted it out of range and the computor is running at a preset. Could it be something like the O2 sensor or MAF sensor sending a bad signal to the computor. I am confused please help.

give it as much tps as you can and it sill be able to idle, bring the timing up till it spark knocks on slight accell, then back it off a little, check the big rubber air tube for cracks and air leaks and clean up the throttle body and look for other vacuum leaks, the up and down idling is called hunting, the ecu is trying to find a speed at where the motor will idle a steady speed but it keeps slowing down for some reason

I have already thought of the vacum leak idea. I have gone over every hose only to find nothing that could be a leak. I used starting fluid to find the suspected leak but nothing. I will go over it again though. I think I am going to motor vac it also to see if that does anything. Mabey I will clean out the sensors. I am not positive on how to check the O2 sensor as it is a single wire sensor and should creat its own voltage. The book I have on it does not tell what spesifications it should be. Stupid computor is to old to hook up to a diagnostic tool and it has no codes the manual way.
