1990 Camry Too Fast Idle

My 1990 4 cyl. (automatic) Camry's idle started running too fast all of a sudden. It almost seems like I have a vacuum leak, but the car runs fine with no misses etc. I sprayed starting fluid around the hoses looking for a leakwith no success. My Haynes tells how to adjust the idle on cars up to 1987 (after that nothing).

What should I look for?

Thanks,

RK

Check idle speed control valve, if it does not help, find out that there is the power steering pump air control valve is not stuck open.

There is an adjustment screw ontop of the throttle body.

Too fast idle

I cleaned the throttle body and screwed in the adjustment screw. The idle slowed down but I still think I have a vac leak somewhere and the screw is just compensating for the leak. If the engine noise iwasn't so high I probably could hear it. Maybe I can find a vacuum system diagram somewhere.

Thanks again,

RK

Spray starter fluid on the vacuum hoses. If there is a leak, the idle will get really high for the moment the spray is applied to the area.

.....old school trick

Or try using a small propane torch, valve on but no flame. The propane will also get into any vacuum leak and effect the idle.
