88 Camry Seat-Belt Problem

Hello all,

I've recently had a problem with the driver-side seat belt in my 1988 Camry. The seat-belt will not retract away from me when I open my door. I suspect that a fuse as blown, but I don't know where I could find the fuse for this. Could you please help? Are there other things that might've effected the inability for my seat-belt to me retracted?

Other problem that I've had (though it's not a huge one) is that the check engine light will turn on if I force the car to use more power on the freeway. The engine has been rebuilt and there hasn't been any problems that I see with it. When I turned off the engine, and start it back up, the check engine light would disappear and would only come back if I force the car again. I've used a diagnostic tester for my check engine light problem, but I keep getting readings that are "1 flash", meaning nothing is wrong. What could be the cause of this?

Please help.

Hey ckimtang, welcome to the forum!

There are a few threads about the seat belt issue. Use the "Advanced Search" feature and do a search for "seat belt" in the 1-2 gen Camry forum. There are a few threads there that will point you in the right direction.

No idea on your CEL issue, but i'm sure the brilliant minds here will have some ideas.

There is a switch inside a door latch that activates belt only when door is closed. In addition, there are two limit switches at the end of the belt track, but the latch switch or wires to it most likely have failed.
Refer to the pages 113-118 of Electrical manual for gen.2, it has detailed istructions how to test the circuit of the switches. If the latch switch broke itself (and all three wires are good), you may mount single pole double throw three terminal non momentary toggle switch somewhere within easy access to close and release the seat belt manually.
Attach white wire with black tracer to the center term. of the switch and two others to the remaining terminals (polarity is not important, just be sure to label release position near the switch.)

Read the check engine code and post it, this way it would be possible to diagnose the prablem.

The light blinks very slow.

As for the seat-belt problem, I'll search through the other threads and try those. Thanks for the help so far!

In the meantime, do any of you guys know how many degrees are needed to adjust the TDC for a 96 Camry? I had to adjust the one with my 88 Camry according to the sticker in the hood of my car, but that is non-existant on my friend's 96 Camry.

Slow blinking light could be for code 11: ECU power feed wires. Also, make sure that there is trhe continuity between E1 terminal and intake manifold. There is a bolt on the back of maifold which used for computer system ground.

I've ran through all of the posts in this thread and have tried them all. My main concern right now is to try to get my seat-belt to work properly. I've checked the motor and it seems to work properly when we got power going through it, so that isn't the problem. However, when I used a test light to check the continuity of the electric current in the red and green wires and grounded it, the seat-belt will either move back or forward. It seems there isn't any power going through it. I replaced the ECU located under the handbrake, but that didn't seem to have had any effect. I also simply cannot understand the wiring diagrams...

What are the possible things for me to do from this point?
