Plusating while coasting?

Hello,

My car is 1989 Toyota Camry LE 4-cylinder with 150,000 miles.

The problem is a pulsating feeling coming from the engine. This pulsation only occurs when I am coasting. For example, let's say I'm driving 40mph; when I take my foot off of the gas the engine will sort-of pulsate while I am coasting. I think I can feel it more than hear it. The car does not have a tach so rpm's are unkown to me but it doesn't sound like the engine is reving much if any at all. As soon as I touch the gas the pulsation goes away.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Craig

Hm sounds like what I got. When I cruise I hear this whirring/honing noise and around 24mph and 38mph I feel something lurching back and forth like my axles or something.

My front brakes were found to be a horrible rusted mess. On Saturday, I put on Brembo rotors and OEM pads. I'm not sure if it fixed it or not but I have not felt it yet.

On Sunday, I removed and cleaned the TB and ISC. The PCV line was almost completely clogged. I was hoping for a dramatic change in the rough idle but I did not notice much of a change. At least it's clean now

i'm with atobe. check transmission mounts AND engine mounts. They could be broken and need new ones.
I have seen many broken engine mounts and they are not always obvious. Sometimes the rubber part seperates from the metal and it isnt visible unless you put a jack (with piece of wood cushion) and lift the engine up a little. Also a split in the rubber can look the same - a broken mount can be almost invisible unless you know what you are looking at.

2nd Generation

I have a similar issue (but intermittent) with my 92 Gen 2. It's been diagnosed as an Idle Speed Control (ISC) motor misbehaving. Will be buying a replacement from a wrecker soon to fix as opposed to $350 for a new one. I've been assured its not life threatening. Also happens at standstill with aircon on.

First try cleaning the idle air control valve. Remove the big tube leading to the throttle body. Now locate the square or diamond shaped hole in the bottom of the throttle body. That is the passage leading to the idle air control valve. Spray throttle body cleaner or O2 safe carb cleaner liberally in to that port. Leave it for about 5 minutes. Then reconnect the big tube and start the car. It might be a bit difficult to start since at first, you be running a very rich mixture, but it will eventually start. It might also run rough for a minute or so, but will eventually smooth out. Give it a try. It's cheap, easy and should take only about 10 minutes.

We have am 86 Camry with the 2SE engine with over 200,000 miles on it. It was acting very similar. Started off as a pulsation and steadily over a long period of time got worse......much worse. Toward the end it was bucking so bad it was virtually un-drivable. I was totally convinced that it was the clutch gone out of it. But what it wound up being was a worn out distributor shaft!

Hope this helps
