Toyota Starter Problems

I have the same starter problems on two Camry's (90 and 91) and an 82 Corolla.
Three rebuilt starters have been replaced on all of the vehicles and all have had the same problem. At times, after the car has been run for awhile and then stopped, the starter will not spin. From that point on regardless how long you let the car sit, the starter will not spin unless you take a hard object (rebar or hammer) and hit the starter. With the last starter on the Corolla, I took the starter off and cleaned up the contacts of the solonoid and thought I had the problem fixed. No such luck.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

had this problem, try this, when the car is not turning over take a jumper wire from the sol. to the pos. side of the battery. if it cranks then the wiring from the ignition switch is getting voltage drop.

instead of tearing into the harness i ran a new wire from the ignition switch to the sol. throw a fuse in the new circuit just for kicks

i have had this prob on a celica and camry

Cleaning up the solenoid contacts may not help. It is best to replace them. They are cheap and it's an easy DIY repair. Here's a post on doing it and also where you can get the contacts:

Attach test light to the small solenoid terminal (one connected to ign. switch).
Turn key to start
If the light comes ON, but starter is not spinning, the brushes inside starter are sticking in the holders.
I had same problem with the starter reman. for autozone.

Same problem with a starter that my uncle bought for our 1985 Camry when the orginal OEM (I think, it had all that dirty and such on it) starter started to give problem at around 125,000miles . He got it from Carquest I think. Quite sure it was a reman also.

Thing is, It would start with no problem then when you turn off the car then try start it later, it would not start, nothing. Only the engine light (along other lights) stay but with no click when turning the key. You'd have to then get a hammer or something and knock/wack the starter a few times before you can get it to start.

I think my uncle went and got the starter replaced about a few times since the one we had to keep wacking had all these markings on it and the one in it doesn't have all the marking. I think he finally got lucky with another carquest starter or something.

The problem sounds heat related. That much is clear. I used to own a VW Rabbit that had this problem big time, but the starter on that POS was mounted under the exhaust manifold. And that's not the case here.
You are getting too much resistance on the starter circuit. Check your wiring and cabling, is it worn/chafed/corroded? Loose ground or connections?
Also, your ignition switch could be worn and not passing enough voltage, or barely enough. And when the starter is on a hot engine this raises the resistance just little too much.
