Gen1 Heater Fan switch

Hey guys, I'm new here, and I don't see many posts for Gen1 Camry's. I guess there aren't too many left running on the streets.

Anyway, I've got an '86 and the 5-way switch to adjust the fan speed for the heater inside seems to only work after the 4th position. So in the winter I can only get the fan to run in pos 4 and 5.

Any ideas why i dont get the fan running when the switch is in one of the lower positions?

Thanks.
M

It's a common issue. Do a search and there's info on the subject. I know personally cause I inquired about the same thing a while back, but I dont remember the specifics.

Thanks for the links guys, and sorry for my ignorance. I should've done a search on this forum first. Anyway, I pulled the resistor pack out and indeed two of the three coils have broken.

I can't seem to solder them back together so I may run to the salvage yard and find an used one intact. Does anyone know if they changed the resistance in the packs between Gen1 and Gen2?

ie: I have an '86, could i use the resistor pack from a '90 camry?

Thanks.

The resistance and pin out may have changed between gen 1 and gen 2. I can't say for sure without seeing schematics for both.

If you find a good one from a gen 2, you can probably use the resistors. Just unsolder them and use them to replace your broken ones.

i know the pins are different between the gen2s... if you have the push buttons it has a 6pin connector while if you have the regular levers for air it's 4 pin connector.
