From looking at this on Rockauto.com, I see they list a regular starter and a gear-reduction starter. They don't specifically say, but I'm assuming the gear-reduction starter goes with the Cold Start Package.

Wondering if the 2 different starters are interchangable? There's some smart people here who will know.

All starters used on older Camrys are of gear reduction type.
Only option available is 1 and 1.4 kW.

I ran in to this when changing out the starter on my generation 4. I went to a local electrical rebuilder that was recommended to me by a friend who is a professional Mazda tech. I called and they had one for my car on the shelf. When I got there with my starter he said the one in your car is a cold start package starter. He said it simply means the + terminal on the starter is on the back side of the starter, as it sits in the car. On other starters it's in the front. He said the one he had may work if the + cable is long enough to reach the front. I opted to wait around about an hour and a half while he rebuilt my starter.

When you look them up on Rockauto.com you come away with the impression that gear reduction is an option, because they list ones available by the same manufacturer, and one says "gear reduction". Not necessarily wrong information, but misleading at best.
