2VZ-FE Can It Handle A Turbo?

So how hard is it to boost a 2VZ FE? What setups would you run? How money should i be thinking to put down? Is the motor easy to turbo? What are weak links on this motor that will need to be streghten? Hows the trannys in this car? How much horsepower before something breaks?

HAHA I know its alot of question, i know its probally been ask several if many times, but i wanna do my homework before i even think of getting a project car.

I'm planning to give my 2VZ-FE about 7 psi of boost. i'm aiming for around 280 HP or so. Any more than that I'm afraid my auto tranny won't be able to handle it. the internals of the engine i heard were very strong and should be able to handle massive amounts of HP without any sort of rebuild, and compression ratio of 9.0:1 is low enough for a turbo. so it seems like a good engine for turbocharging, i mean, who needs 3s-gte when this V6 has even more potential? soon i will lift out my engine so that i can get a better view of the engine, to make plans for a turbo installation.

i bought a garrett T3 turbo w/wastegate off ebay for $36, an intercooler for $30, and a blow-off valve for $10. i don't think it will cost very much, but we'll see...

And how are you planning to handle the turbo? Just bolt it on to the manifold off the front bank? Or are you gonna re-route the front header? I've just bought a spare 2VZ for my Camry, and since it's on the engine stand already this would be a good time for me to think about these things!

TBay, did you get the V6 out of the Kidney Foundation car you were talking about earlier?

You got it...I'm thinking of keeping the "Lexus" valve cover on it, just to screw with my GM-loving buddies. They know absolutely nothing about imports, so they think Yota and Lexus are like Nissan and Honda.

I kinda wish I didn't have to pay $500 for the engine, but it only has 90,000miles (150K km) on it and it runs like a dream.

IMHO, $500 is a good price if it runs great and you don't have to do any work on it. And I'd definately leave the Lexus valve covers on.

Yup, they'll complement the nice turbo I'm gonna slap on it!!

I'll see if their price on the Lexus rims is decent, then it'll really be a Franken-car.

Here's a nice TRUCKLOAD of information for those of us interested in the 2VZ/turbo project:

That's a lot of math to digest. I should be done by spring, if I'm lucky.

Where to start? Intake and exhaust, lowering springs/struts...do some searches in this forum because there are a LOT of ideas floating around...nice score on the rediculously low mileage engine, though. I was happy to find a 2VZ last week with three times that mileage.

Hi
Is it true that when you are driving a turbo charged car and you are going to put off the engine it is not advisable to switch off right away the engine. You wait for a minutes to switch off the engine.

^ This is true. They make what is called a Turbo Timer which allows the turbo to spool down to idle speeds before the car turns off. This is needed for cooling purposes.

i was wondering also about a turbo for the 2vz, i had read that the turbo would be hard to fit on to it since there isnt alot of engine space under the hood. i was wondering how true this was??
