1991 ES250 - LOUD knocking from drivetrain

First off hello everyone. I've been a Toyota lover since my '93 4x4 v4 but this is the first time I've been so frustrated with one.

My 1991 ES250 makes this very loud knocking that telegraphs through the whole car when it is in gear and accelerating. It used to be an intermittent thing but now is pretty much constant. It does not seem to be any problem with gears meshing as there is no loss of power when the noise is occuring. Best I can figure it is a spinning part the outside of which is coming in contact with a piece of the undercarriage or god forbid the interior of the transmission casing.

Has anybody experienced something similar to this with an ES250 or Camry of this year? Was it in the transmission (i.e. should I start shopping for a new car)?

Inspect the inner CV axle joints first.

Inspect the CV joints & if destroyed, change the entire axle half-shafts.
