Need a quick answer please!!

Hey all:

"Scooter" the '87 Camry has been running rough. Changing the plug wires, rotor, distributor cap. After removing the cap, the gasket or what the dealer called "packing" was in pretty bad shape, so I will order one from dealer tomorrow. The dust shield was in 3 pieces so depending on responses, I may or may not order one.
Is it necessary to have the dust shield? Only thing I can see it covers is the coil.

Thank you for the suggestions,

DJ

Your coil may be affected by moisture. Although I'm not sure that is what is causing your car to run rough....

Um, even if you haven't seen the "check engine" light come on (assuming the bulb isn't burnt) I would still run a diagnostic. If you get a trouble code, I wouldn't be surprised if your O2 sensor is shot...

Follow-up...

Hey all:

Success!! Changed plugs, rotor, plug wires. Plug boot #4 had a place on it that appeared to be leaking spark. There was a round bluish area with a white center right where the boot attaches to the plug. Also, it wasn't the dust guard that broke but a plastic shield. The Yota dealer said the guard is a safety issue to prevent someone brushing the coil and getting zapped.

I appreciate the ideas and help!

Respectfully,

DJ
