crankshaft pulley/timing belt question

do I need a special tool to attach to the crank pulley in order to hold it still while I am loosening the main bolt.
or would an impact gun have enough initial force to loosen it without locking the crank in position.

and lastly when I am puuting the timing belt back on how can I find out what the proper tension is,, Should I just mark it before I release the tensioner and move it back to its initial position

An impact wrench will loosen the bolt. In a pinch it can also be used to install the bolt. Better to use a torque wrench. Install two long bolts into the puller holes on the crank pulley. Use a bar between the bolts and floor to hold the pulley. Might need a puller to remove the pulley, if so use a bolt puller not a clamp type.

The belt tension system has either an exposed loose spring or a tension unit. The manual states to install the belt then release the tension pulley (and tighten the bolt). Or release the tension rod on the tensioner. Some car owners have complained of timing belt slap and push the tension pulley into the belt to achieve a higher tension level.

awsome thanks for the help man... I think I am gonna loosen the bolt with the wheel still bolted on on the ground because I have enough room for the impact wrench and the pulley wont spin with the wheel on the ground

ok well I got the pulley off and the lower timing belt cover, but damnit the lower cover broke when I pulled it out, not major, but a corner broke off the top of the cover, around the area of the eng mount..it looks like I shoul be able to get it back on without that corner.

would I be able to slide the timing belt off without loosening the tensioner because it sure looks like I can and then just slide the new one on..
and also before I take the belt off what do i do to put the engine at TDC.. is the cam pulley the only part I need place a reference mark on?
