1st n 2nd gen gas mileage?

for a full tank of gas (about 12Gall) I am getting about 220 miles out of it (18MPG) no highway driving.
although before I changed my fuel pump I used to get around 275M (23MPG)
you think I would get better mileage, huh!

whats everyones mileage like?

I get about 25-28 on mixed driving, about 20-24 on city use, and 32+ on strictly highway use....not bad for an 18 year old car with 132K.
Brand new the 3SFE was rated at 28/31 city/highway.

Rock:

My '87 (Scooter/105k miles/automatic) gets avg. mileage as follows:

1. Highway w/o AC - 38 mpg w/AC 27 mpg

2. Pulling a 4'x8' trailer with riding mower and push mower - w/AC - 25 mpg

3. City driving - 32 mpg.

Mine has a 15 gallon fuel tank. Also, the fellow I bought mine from, about a year ago, put on smaller tires than Toyota recommends.

AC usage really reduces the mileage but worth the trade off.

well if you have smaller tires, than none of those readings are accurate, tire size determines the speedometer and odometer - change from factory and you can be off, smaller size = car is going slower than the speedometer is reading

My gen2 got 25-30mpg, was as low as 15mpg when it was running rough - Change your spark plugs, distributer cap and rotor, change the sparkplug wires, and change the ignition coil - probably solve your problem.

change them anyways, car will run pretty well untill they actually fail, youll just get shitty milage. another thing you can look into is your thermostat, if its stuck open, your milage will be a bit low too.

if you werent in canada, id give you a spare wire set i have, but but you're in canada, so shipping is a bitch.

Wagon tanks arent bigger, all gen2's have a 15.9gallon tank, though most can only get about 13gallons in it

the tank has low areas and such that the pump cannot reach, as the tank would have to be angled downwards with the pump at the lowest place for all the fuel to be usable. most cars have 2-3 gallons that arent usable in the tank.

I see what your saying, but on the other hand, brand new original replacement tanks are 13.5 gallons and not 16 gallons like the other guy said he had........
http://replacement.car-stuff.com/parts/carstuff/wizard.jsp?year=1988&make=TO&model=CAM-2-001&category=E∂=Fuel%20Tank&returnurl=null&dp=true &showdc=true#top
According to this part dealer, all 87-91 Cams had 13.5 gallon tanks regardless of body or engine.

Look on edmunds or Toyota Factor repair manual or even the manual for the car itself, right on the back it says 15.9 gallon.

aftermarket parts are often different from OEM
