what's wrong?

my 89 LE has been leaking coolant fluid for two weeks now. I've been kind of busy so I've been filling it off and on. Just yesterday it started to make this scraping noise from under the hood. I'd figure I look at it when I got home but it went out about half way. it shut off while I was going 50mph and the engine check light came on along with the oil light. towed my car home. the motor sounds like it's out of fuel(cranking but not starting). Still leaking, sorry for the long read but any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

didn't see where it leaked from. it was dripping off the oil pan so I assume some where from the cover. the radiator and the hose look clean.

Sounds to me like the water pump is trashed. In order to do the pump, the TB has to be removed. So do the timing belt and seals as well. Dont forget the timing belt tensioners!

What Fredk said, pop the distributor cap and see if the rotor turns while you crank the engine. If it doesn't then you know the timing belt is broken. What's more, Toyota points out that water or oil on the belt will shorten its life. With the leak you describe it suggests the water pump leaked and kept the belt wet and the belt broke and stalled the engine.

Count your lucky stars. It could have been a Honda and you could have bent the piston rods! Toyota is wonderful for keeping a non interference engine.
