Sticky Throttle Body

Does everyone else with the 87-91 4 cyl 5 speed have as much trouble as I do with the throttle sticking from crankcase gunk in the throttle body? Well...its not really that bad, but I do have to clean it out every 5 K...

I have the same problem with the tb on my 5-speed V6. I have to clean it every 3 to 4 months, or else the throttle sticks. My throttle body is slightly worn-out, but I don't think that's the whole story. I've noticed more blow-back oil in the tb, at the butterfly valve, and I think it's sneaking-in from the crankcase. Does anyone care to weigh-in on this theory? Could a leaky gasket on/in the crankcase or valve cover cause this problem?

There are several posts on this site for an easy fix for this the TBI and plenum getting dirty inside; the fix is to splice in a cheap, clear in-line fuel filter into the vacuum line between the valve cover and plenum. And the filter will catch most of the oily gases from the engine. And then hopefully you will not have to clean it so often.

I think the problem is there is a little bit more blowby from a used engine, but if it runs ok and passes smog, so what? Even brand new engines have SOME blowby (due to gap in rings!) and so nothing to worry about, to me.

Just make sure that idle PCV passage that opens up on the other side of throttle plate is clear.
