2nd Generation Replacement engine 3sfe

Hello, I have an 88 camry and it overheated due to a non working temp gauge and my stupidity
The good thing is I get to start another project

With all the places selling replacement engines what places are good to do business with?

I called a place in CA (found in search here) and they just laughed at me wanting them to ship to Iowa

Car has 161k and I'm wondering if it is wise to replace the auto tranny when I have things apart. My current tranny shifts hard 1 to 2. What are your thoughts? I would like to get another 2 years/80k miles out of the car.

Thanks

Brian

Shifting hard 1st to 2nd could be due to the higher then normal fluid level. A140 transaxles must not be overfilled. After I picked up the car from pofessional shop after fluid change prior to bying car, they overfilled it approx. 1/3 of qt, which was enough to cause hard shift (and negotiate the price down). After I adjusted level to full cold, the shift is much improved.
Unless the fluid is dark, there is no need to change transmission.

Engine has been bought

Hello, I have purchased a JDM replacement. Besides replacing the timing belt waterpump while I have the engine out of the car what else needs attention? Does one replace the cam/crank/oil pump seals? Hopefully the shipper will call in the next few days so I can finish the car over Thanksgiving.

yep, replace ALL the seals and gaskets you can find.

youll kick yourself if you spring a leak in 2 months because you didnt spend the $4 on a oil seal.

Remove oil pan, clean the oil pick-up screen.

Engine is here

More questions for the experts and it has to do with the intake manifold.

When I swap manifolds from US to JDM block can I get rid of the EGR and EVAP stuff on the US manifold? These items have to be getting old so instead of replacing I'm thinking removal. We don't have emission checks here in Iowa.

Could I just use the JDM manifold instead of swapping to save work? Or is it more work because they are different?

On the rear of the jDM block towards the oil pan is what I assume is the oil pressure sender. My block doesn't have this. Do I pull the sender and put a plug in or leave it alone?

Thanks for all your help.

Yes, you can leave the EGR stuff off, make a block off plate and seal up the hole on the USDM intake. You can use the JDM one, but it is more work, but there will be some HP gain. Not sure what would be required.

On the back of the JDM block there is a knock sensor, pretty sure thats what your looking at. Just leave it alone, itll be fine as is.

Moving on to transmission

I went ahead and bought a JDM tranny also while I have the engine work. I would hate to do the motor then have the tranny fail 20k miles down the road. Of course it may never fail but I didn't want to take the chance.

I moved the shifter arm between the trannys. My questions have to do with the connections on the JDM tranny. The JDM tranny has a connector with a single purple and a single tan wire supplied with it. I need to connect these wires with the white and gray maybe black wire comming out of the US tranny? How do they connect W to P and B to Tan?

The other connector I'm confused about is right behind the shifter arm/electronic indicator switch unit. It is a single black wire connected to a cylinder piece. On the JDM it is just the female side of a connector. I assume I need to splice my old wire onto this female connector on the JDM?

Sorry the post is windy. It is late and not thinking clearly.

Hopefully in another week or so the car will be back on the road.

Thanks

Brian

Would you please post the pictures of the connectors/wires you are talking.
Is the original transaxle E or L type?

Splicing wires just to give a shot may damage ECT computer. Normally, there are 5 wires going out from A140E transmission:
  • two wires from speed sensor (back side 2 inch dia. round feature that is facing drive axle while in the car)
  • One single wire on the front (radiator) side fom vertical cylindrical object between servo cover and bellhousing (lock-up solenoid)
  • two wires close together near the entrance of dipstick tube(black and white on US model, for solenoids 2 and 1)
  • one of the wires to the speed sensor, usually brown, is attached to the transaxle (for system ground)

Areas in question

The lock solenoid and the black & white wire by the dipstick are the ones in question On the JDM tranny both are just a receptacle for a plug. A plug with a purple and tan wire was supplied for the solenoid 1/2 receptacle on the JDM. On the US tranny the black/white and the lock solenoid wire vanish into the tranny. Splicing seems to be the only answer besides taking the tranny apart for hooking up these wires. Thanks

Bumping my thread

Yay or Nay on splicing wires for the JDM tranny? Certainly don't want to destroy the ECT computer but I don't see any other choice besides tearing the tranning apart to get to the end of the wires in the tranny.
