2nd Generation just fixed coil 4 cyl, v6 camy has similar prob

Hi all - thought I'd join this since my son & I have similar cars. His is 6cyl 1989, mine is 4cyl 1990.
I fixed my "stall-at-warm-up" problem by changing the coil on 90 4cyl. DX. Now other camry has a similar prob, but this one does not stall at warmup, but requires pressure on throttle to keep from stalling when warm. Any ideas? Fuel filter just changed,no difference. I'm guessing idle air speed control valve needs cleaning/changing, or coil.http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/im...s/confused.gif

Is the "check engine" light coming on? Try running some seafoam through your intake and put some in the gas tank to clean up any build-up. Also when you step on the throttle, does it seem to bog down for a second before picking up RPMs?

Re: Check engine...

No check engine light - it just idles so slow (when warmed up) the foot has to help keep it running. 2 foot operation at stop lights. What is "seafoam"? is it an injector cleaner?

Seafoam is a sort of all-around cleaning product--safe for the fuel system, intake, and crankcase...good stuff. My 1990 V6 had a similar problem to yours, and I simply cleaned the throttle body and the problem disappeared. The gunk that builds-up in there over time can affect the butterfly valve, idle speed control, etc so it's good to clean it.

This problem is usually a dirty idle air control valve as you suggested, a defective ECT (engine coolant temp sensor), or a vacuum leak. Start by cleaning the idle air control valve.
