I drive a 1990 Camry. The antenna mast is completely "taken off." The motor works fine, but the mast is destroyed. I want to replace it myself, but not sure how...
Obtain new antenna rod from dealer, auto parts store or on-line web site.
Turn ign key to “lock” position.
Remove antenna nut.
Press AM/FM button on radio and simultaneously turn ignition to “ACC.”
The antenna rod should come all the way out (be sure to catch it).
Insert the cable end of antenna rod into hole (about 15.7in) with teeth facing rear of car.
Wind the cable by turning the ign switch to ”lock.”
If all OK, install nut.
I think he means the ring around the top of the antenna (on top of the trunk/fender) with the 2 slots on it. Unscrew the ring with something. A needle nose pliers will work. I found a retaining ring pliers works well too. Then turn on the radio or have someone turn it on for you while you stay by the antenna to catch the old mast, as it is coming up and out. Note the direction of the teeth on the bottom of the nylon cord, as you will have to insert the teeth in the same direction on the new antenna mast. Insert the new mast and have someone turn off the radio. The teeth should be grabbed by the assembly and the new mast will be pulled right in. When in, screw the ring back on.
I removed the nut. And turned on the radio the same time I turned it to "ACC." Unfortunately, it did not work. Nothing happened.
Here's the story. Somehow the antenna got shredded while it was extended. My sister got pissed and cut off the majority of it. There is still some white nylon cord left, though it does not move anywhere when the radio turns on or off. The motor works fine. The antenna does not "pop" out of the motor like someone said.
If you are sure it works, take the whole assembly out and disassemble it to remove the mast and the nylon cord. Then put the assembly back in and put the new mast in as described above.
I decided to take the whole thing out of the car to work on it.
Is there anything I need to be forewarned about when taking it apart to replace the nylon cord and mast? Or is it pretty easy to disassemble it and work on it?
