2nd Generation empty underhood relay/fuse box location?

Hi all.
On our Gen2 Camry, there is a space in the frontmost location inside the underhood relay/fuse box that is labeled on the cover to contain 2 30amp fuses, but is actully filled with a plastic spacer with no wires running to it. I'm sure it was for optional equipment, or equipment for other models, but does anyone know exactly what it was for, or more specifically, whether of not I could mount a relay for aftermarket driving lights there? I prefer the factory look, and since there is an open spot there, I'm thinking why not?

I hate seeing extraneous coloured wire running underhood, it looks suspicious and amateur!

Pics to follow sometime after I complete the install...

Great link, thanks!
So, to answer my own question: the empty slot is there regarding daytime running lights for the Canadian market cars. The relay for that circuit is not in the underhood fuse/relay box, but within the dashboard area (I think,) and simply an additional fuse for each headlight is contained in the underhood fuse/relay box. Maybe the relay for auxilliary lights could be housed there, but it seems like some modification would be in order.
Maybe I'll have to consider other ideas for locating the relay for now...anyone have a slick suggestion?

Thanks, toyomoho!

Yes, it can be frustrating to add something and keep the wiring looking stock. Sometimes you can find and use wires for optional equipment that was not installed. Not sure if there were any optional items installed in the area of the running lights.

You might be able to hide the relay someplace, then run a small dia relay control wire to the inside of the car. Or strip some wiring, fuse and relay boxes from a junk Toyota. At least you would have the same type and color of materials.

Well, it's a little ugly right now underhood, but everything works.
I swapped the leads to use the corner lamps as directional indicators, and mounted some Hella FF75 driving lights in the stock location for directional indicators, removing the stock lamps there. Our headlamp lenses are somewhat hazy, but the new driving lamps alone produce subjectively more illumination than the stock lamps. Now will begin the gradual process of making it look better. I'm reasonably impressed with the quality of the included harness from Hella. They include an interior switch, fused relay, and pre-terminated leads.
I've bought some very stock looking 'corrugated' split hose to conceal the wires, but haven't installed it yet, since I need to trim some leads and extend some others to shorten, ground point bolts to replace with extension studs, etc...

I did find one strange empty lead pair inside the passenger side fender, close to the corner marker lamp. It has a small white oval connector similar to the corner marker lamp's connector, so I'm going to investigate via the wiring diagram you linked what that could be. If the wiring harness in the car is the same harness that is in the ES250, then it could very well be the lead pair for the auxilliary driving lamps. I would love to be able to use the stock ES250 switches flanking the instrument panel, including the driving lamp switch that is in that location, to trigger my driving lamp relay. If that is possible, I may end up having to swap a whole slew of ES250 parts in to do it, but what the heck, they're reasonably inexpensive...

At any rate, I can hardly believe that this car has been used so long with only the stock lights, since it is so much less stressful to drive in the rain and dark at this point.
Photos to come when I'm a little less embarassed of the wire routing...
