Cooling fans not working on my ’86 Camry

In stop and go traffic the temperature gauge keeps rising to near the top without the fans turning on. If I turn the A/C on, the fans do come on. What should I check? Are the fans controlled by a temperature switch? If so where is it? Is there an online wiring diagram like they have for the GEN2 posted anywere?

Turn ignition on, do not start the engine.Unplug the fan switch connector located on the thermostat housng (lower rad. hose near the water pump). If fans are on now, replace the fan switch.

Thanks for the info, the fans did come on after pulling the connector so I'll replace the switch.
