loud clicking/popping/crunching sound coming from right front wheel

When I make right or left turns, the left front wheel of my 88 camry makes a loud popping/crunching/clicking noise? What is it? The same sound was coming from an old Tercel that owned and when the parts were pulled apart and examined, the component that held the bearings together was messed-up. Could be the same? I've been doing my homework and read that it could be the CV Joint... true? Any suggestions. Could I do it myself? Could it be a one day deal? How much would a mechanic charge if they did it? Could they do it in one day? Please help!!!
Thanks,
Fredo

A noise like that while turning or even going slowly is a sign if bad CV joint(s). For all I know, it's pretty costly.

This is usually caused if the CV boot (that protects and keeps the grease in and rubish out) around the joint is torn for a decent period of time. I would check if the CV boot is torn.

What if the CV boot is not torn? Mines does the same thing intermittently.

boot doesnt have to be torn for the joint to be bad.

CV's arent hard to replace. replace the whole axle, not just the joints. basic tools and a breaker bar are all youll need. Think they're about $100 just about anywhere.

^^ Yeah, the nice thing about these cars is that you can remove/replace the driveaxle without removing the hub. It only takes about an hour or two for a first-timer to replace, but be careful prying the inner end our of the transmission...don't hammer on it or anything or you'll damage the output shaft/gear.

If you take in to some place like Pep Boys, they charge around $200 to replace the whole axle with a rebuilt one.

CV joint grease?

If I replace the cv joint myself, what type of grease should be used? Someone told white high temperature grease?

If you want to replace the CV joint instead of the axle (which I do not recommend) the joint will come in a box with a boot, two clamps, and a ration of grease.

Do the axle.
