88 camry crankshaft bearing change

Just aquired an 88 camry. Do not have it here with me yet, but the motor is a 4cyl and has the number 2000 on it. Anyway, the guy I bought it from said the crankshaft bearing is out. It starts and runs, but you can definately hear the bearing if you rev it up a little. He said you can change it without removing the engine. Any truth to this?

Prior to tearing into the engine verify the noise source!

Well I went and listened to it again. It is definately in the lower end. And it knocks HARD and loud if you rev it up a little.

If the engine is knocking it is most likely a rod bearing. It is possible to change it out with the engine in the car but the crankshaft journal must not have been damaged from being hammered. The longer you drive it, the more potential for damage.

if it is good and loud the crank is probably history and the big end of the rod egg shaped and hammered

What fredk said. Dont try to patch it, for a proper repair the crank has to come out, , the journals inspected for excess wear and damaged, and miked for diameter etc.
I'd be thinking you need a remanufactured long block at least..., sorry but theres no point in doing any half measures for a crankshaft repair unfortunately.

I say avoid buying it, sounds serious. There are plenty of Gen2's around......dont settle!
