V6 auto trans question...

i tried taking the shift handle off of my '91 today and after almost removing it (o/d button wires kept it on) I now am getting what sounds like a relay click from under the dash when the car's in park and I push the shift handle button (like I'm taking it out of park). If I leave it in park and just squeeze the button repeatedly I can hear the relay open and close over and over again. Don't know if this is something I just never noticed or something I broke today... help!!

NEXT QUESTION: how could attempting to disassemble the shifter have affected the "shift lever interlock pawl"? and is this a problem I need to be concerned about or is it no biggie (it doesn't affect driveablity at all, that I've noticed)
