1st & 2nd Generation (1983–1986 & 1987-1991)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1983-1986 & 1987-1991.
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Here it is guys, the first North American produced Gen 2 Camry. I've been wanting to get back in to take some pics of it, and finally had time today to do that at lunchtime. I don't know why the pic thru the window is so crappy, the window didn't look that dirty. It was locked of course, so I couldn't get any decent interior pics, but it's a pretty nice leather interior. The VIN plate was completely blank.
That's probably very true, and in reality, I'd be surprised if it had more than 4 or 5 on it. I tried to look, but couldn't see the odometer. I will ask next time I'm in there though. Gotta go back and pick up a nice Toyota jacket I saw there.
I REALLY want a set of basketweaves like it's got. I was surprised at the dirt on the floor though. Hell, my camry is cleaner than that on the driver's floor area.
Wow...back into time. I could stare at something like that for a whole day.

If you consider V6 an option, it's also missing that since I believe in 1988 was the first time V6 became an option? Although for a 4cyl setup, it has everything except the floor mats...lol
EDIT : Come to think about it, was the electronic dash an option back then? Maybe they decided to make a camry (The first one) with the more 'common' configuration.
EDIT : I believe that the V6 models had to be imported from Japan at that time since the Kentucky plant didn't make any V6?

Yeah i do believe the V6 motor had to be imported from JPN (was the case here anyways), so it's probobly why it has the configuration it does.

One question: if 1990 was the first year for the American made Camry, why was the first one made in '88?
1988 was the first year for American made Camry. Where did you hear that 1990 was the first year?
They also had a sectioned hybrid Camry in the visitor's center, but I strangely found the '88 to be more interesting. The new Camry is incredibly nice, and is supposedly a LOT nicer than just the previous generation model. Everyone at work who'd driven one praises it for the power and smoothness. But when I buy a car, it has to look good to me. I dunno... I guess the looks have to grow on you, and the front end has a whole lot of "growing" to do before I like it. Reminds me of a particular animal I've seen pics of, don't remember what it was at the moment.

I guess it's the rareness thing associated with the older generation camrys. It's like all we see today are beaten up Gen1 and Gen2, so it's like a real eye opener to see one in showroom condition. I mean after all, it's not an everyday sight like a Shiny Gen6 Camry.
I somehow have this idea parking my grandparents' Gen1 camry next to a new Gen6 Camry very intriguing. I guess it's the entire idea of 'evolution' with the Camry species. I wonder what the Gen6 owner's reaction would be if they actually saw a Gen1 Camry right next to their new one.
"That's a Camry? I didn't know it was a Camry..."

Yeah, here in KY, and specifically in Georgetown where they're built, Camrys are all over the place, but mint Gen 2s are rare, and ANY Gen 1 is even more rare. But on a couple occasions I've parked with with several various gen Camrys in a row. Pretty cool.
